Looking at the trade in patents only, 18% of the Danish patent active businesses traded their patents in 2011.

Differences between small and large businesses
Among patent active businesses that trade in patents, the tendency is for the largest businesses to trade most frequently. E.g. figure 2 shows that more than 25 pct. of the patent active businesses with more than 100 employees traded in patents in 2011.

Differences between industries
Figure 3 shows in which industries the patent active businesses trade their patents most frequently. E.g 25 pct. of the patent active businesses in furniture/clothing trade their patents, while medico/health stand out with the largest proportion of patent active businesses that trade in patents.

Who are the trading partners of the Danish companies?
The Danish companies that have traded in patents /utility models has been doing this both at home and abroad. App. 20 pct. of the Danish companies that have traded with patents / utility models have done this with foreign trading partners. The equivilant number of companies that have traded with Danish trading partners are smaller - app. 8-14 pct.

Buying, selling or licensing rights
Trade in patents does not necessarily mean buying or selling patents. As can be seen from figure 4, Danish businesses in- and out-license to a larger extent than they purchase and sell patents. In 2010 more than 10 pct. of the Danish patent active businesses out-licensed their patents. The figures include all patent active businesses, and as some of them do not trade their patents, the numbers do not add up to 100.
